The definition of counselling is:

“The provision of professional assistance and guidance in resolving personal or psychological problems.”

Many people seek counselling at some point in their lives. It may be at a time of sudden change such as a bereavement, the end of a relationship, being made redundant or being diagnosed with a serious or life threatening illness. Others may suffer anxiety, confusion or depression for no understandable reason or have recognised a repeating pattern of maladaptive behaviours that are impacting on their interpersonal relationships.

Some may be experiencing somatic symptoms associated with trauma or adverse experiences during their formative years. And sometimes it may be that you are experiencing an existential crisis and struggling to find direction or purpose. Whatever the situation, it can cause feelings of isolation and unhappiness which can influence not only emotional wellbeing but physical well being.

It is at these difficult times when facing personal crisis many of us welcome having the time and space to talk things over with an understanding and objective outsider.

A counsellor is experienced and trained to listen to what is being said about your personal problems and assists in helping you explore and clarify your thoughts and feelings to give you an insight and understanding to your problems.

A counsellor will help to explore the issues from your point of view and will provide a safe, confidential and non- judgemental environment

The right environment is an important aspect of building a trusting relationship with your counsellor and for you to find your own answers to your difficulties and issues. It is also an opportunity to work out how to be more understanding and accepting of yourself and how to build on personal strengths, gain a stronger sense of self and therefore continue your personal growth.

Successful personal development can result in an improved ability to:

  • Overcome personal difficulties and identify unhelpful patterns of behaviour and thinking that causes emotional distress
  • Be less reactive and improve affect regulation
  • Have more fulfilling and flexible relationships
  • Be more creative and less open to suggestion
  • Gain control in making appropriate decisions or life changes that are right for you
